Overview: A Water Reticulation Practitioner maintains the integrity of the potability of the water supply from the water reservoir to the point of supply. The Water Reticulation Practitioner Qualification (NQF Level 04) prepares a learner to install and maintain water reticulation infrastructure, to identify and fix water leaks, install water meters, maintain the water system and to communicate with colleagues and the public.
As a result, the Water Reticulation Practitioner Qualification (NQF Level 04) focusses on specific occupational tasks including (QCTO Curriculum Document):

  • Installation of water reticulation infrastructure.
  • Operation and maintenance of a water reticulation system.
  • Management of a water reticulation team.

Admission Requirements

  • An NQF Level 2 with Mathematical literacy (i.e. Grade 10 / Standard 8 with mathematical literacy).
  • Please also refer to the section on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Beneficiaries / Target Groups
The target audience for the Water Reticulation Practitioner Qualification (NQF Level 04) include:

  • (Water) practitioners in the private sector (eg. technicians, etc.) and public sector (i.e. technical staff of both water services and water resource management institutions). The technical staff may either be recently employed and/or have many years’ experience but no academic qualifications.
  • Young persons (aged 25 and below) through entry-level occupational qualifications.

Important Dates:

  • The deadline for applications is 5 May 2021.
  • The deadline for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applications is 5 May 2021.
  • The first intake of learners for the Water Reticulation Practitioner Qualification (NQF Level 04) is planned for June 2021.
  • Water Business College (WBC) intends to enrol only a limited number of learners per qualification.

Qualification Rules
This qualification is made up of the following compulsory Knowledge, Practical Skills and Work Experience Modules (QCTO Curriculum Document).
Knowledge Modules:

  • 642605001-KM-01: Workplace fundamentals, Level 3, 5 Credits.
  • 642605001-KM-02: The world of the Water Reticulation Practitioner, Level 4, 6 Credits.
  • 642605001-KM-03: Tools, equipment and electronic devices, Level 3, 5 Credits.
  • 642605001-KM-04: Basic slinging and lifting operations, Level 2, 5 Credits.
  • 642605001-KM-05: Water reticulation systems, Level 4, 17 Credits.
  • 642605001-KM-06: Pipes, piping, and pipe joining, Level 3, 6 Credits.
  • 642605001-KM-07: Pipe laying, valves, actuators, pumps and water meters, Level 4, 9 Credits.
  • 642605001-KM-08: Operating and maintaining a water reticulation system, Level 4, 12 Credits.

Total number of Credits for Knowledge Modules: 65.
Practical Skill Modules:

  • 642605001-PM-01: Use tools and equipment, Level 3, 5 Credits.
  • 642605001-PM-02: Conduct slinging and lifting operations, Level 2, 6 Credits.
  • 642605001-PM-03: Install and test a water reticulation infrastructure, Level 3, 22 Credits.
  • 642605001-PM-04: Safely and respond to emergencies, Level 2, 3 Credits.
  • 642605001-PM-05: Operate and maintain a water reticulation system, Level 4, 18 Credits.
  • 642605001-PM-06: Manage a water reticulation team, Level 4, 3 Credits.

Total number of Credits for Practical Skill Modules: 57.
Work Experience Modules:

  • 642605001-WM-01: Installation processes for water reticulation infrastructure, Level 3, 58 Credits.
  • 642605001-WM-02: Processes to operate and maintain a water reticulation system, Level 4, 50 Credits.
  • 642605001-WM-03: Processes to manage team members, Level 4, 6 Credits.

Total number of Credits for Work Experience Modules: 114.

Structure and Delivery of Occupational Qualifications
The occupational qualifications each have three (3) Components of Competency, namely;

  • A Knowledge Component,
  • A Practical Skills Component, and
  • A Workplace Experience component

The occupational qualifications will be offered over a 2-year period. The knowledge, practical and workplace experience components of an occupational qualification can be structured in a manner to accommodate the requirements of both part-time (i.e. employed staff) and full-time learners.
A hybrid / blended approach to offering the academic programmes of WBC will be implemented. Theoretical and selected practical modules will be offered on-line. Adequate provision will be made for ‘hands-on’ training.
Water Business College (WBC) will apply relevant and the latest technology, software and virtual reality simulations to effectively / optimally deliver the knowledge, practical and workplace experience modules of these qualifications.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applications will be assessed in consultation with the Assessment Quality Partner (AQP) and/or the QCTO.

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), applicable to all qualifications, will be based (amongst other factors) on an applicant’s:
    • Informal learning or non-accredited formal studies
    • Work experience (a minimum of 3 years’ experience within the industry in conjunction with the academic record of the candidate)
    • Implementation of advanced standing in instances where the candidate does not meet the minimum entry requirements
    • Relevant modules that have been successfully completed at other accredited Higher Education Institutions where modules are equivalent in content and standard.

RPL applications, with supporting documentation, must be submitted as outlined below.

  • Water Reticulation Practitioner qualification (SAQA ID 102581 – NQF Level 04):
    • The deadline for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applications is 5 May 2021.
